If Your Finger Keeps Locking Or Clicking, These Will Feel Uncomfortably Familiar
Every time you bend or straighten your finger, it catches, clicks or jolts with pain.
Your finger sometimes locks in a bent position and has to be forced straight with your other hand.
Typing, gripping the steering wheel, opening jars or using tools all feel harder than they should.
Splints, rest or steroid injections only helped for a while, and the problem keeps coming back.
Trigger finger surgery is a minor procedure that releases the tight tunnel around the tendon so it can glide smoothly again. In trigger finger, this tunnel becomes thickened or inflamed, causing the tendon to snag and making the finger lock, click or feel stuck when you move it.
The surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and takes only a short time. A small incision is made in the palm to release the affected tendon sheath. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in movement, with pain and locking reducing very quickly after the procedure.
Removes the mechanical cause of the locking so your finger can glide freely again.
A short operation under local anaesthetic, with no need for an overnight stay.
Most people can use their hand for light tasks within a few days, building up gradually.
Designed as a permanent solution, reducing the need for repeat injections or splints.

Not always. Many patients have already tried splints or steroid injections, but some are referred straight to surgery based on the severity and duration of symptoms. Your hand surgeon will advise whether surgery is the most appropriate first-line or next-step option in your case.
Most people can use their hand for light activities within a few days, although heavier tasks and gripping may take a few weeks to feel fully comfortable. Mild soreness and stiffness are normal early on and improve as you heal.
Recurrence after a properly performed release is uncommon. No procedure can guarantee zero recurrence, but trigger finger surgery is designed to provide long-lasting relief by addressing the mechanical cause of locking.
The incision is small and placed in the palm crease where possible. Some redness and firmness are normal at first, but most scars soften and fade over time. Your surgeon and nursing team will advise on scar care if needed.
